Nantes have completed the signing of Anderlecht's Swedish international Christian Wilhelmsson after protracted negotiations between the two clubs reached a successful conclusion.

The move had been held up with the two clubs unable to agree on a fee but a price of €3.5 million (£2.4 million) has now been set.

Wilhelmsson has signed a three-year contract with The Canaris and becomes the second player to leave Anderlecht in the space of a couple of days, following Vincent Kompany's switch to Hamburg.

"I am relieved that everything is finally okay," Wilhelmsson, who appeared in all four of Sweden's World Cup matches, told La Derniere Heure.

"The clubs could not come to an agreement. Even during the World Cup, it was stressful - I was thinking about it everyday."

Wilhelmsson is now looking forward to continuing his career in Ligue 1 and outlined his objectives for the forthcoming campaign.

"The contract is good and I look forward to playing for Nantes," he told Sportbladet.

"It feels great to join a new league. The French one is of a high quality and I will get the chance to face many good clubs.

"I need new challenges. We are aiming for the top and a top-five finish is not impossible."

GUNNERS TO ENTER RIBERY RACE

Arsenal may be about to enter the race to sign France international winger Franck Ribery.

The Marseille star impressed whilst on World Cup duty in Germany and having intimated that he could be ready to leave the Stade Velodrome, Arsene Wenger has been alerted to his possible availability.

However, with his contract with l'OM not due to expire until 2010, the French club are demanding a fee close to €20 million (£14 million), a price that may beyond the reach of The Gunners.

Ribery stated before the World Cup final that he would be interested in a move to England, and after watching him on a number of occasions during the finals, Wenger may up his bid to bring the 23-year-old to The Premiership.

French champions Lyon looked Ribery's likely destination earlier in the summer but after a row over possible tapping up of the midfielder, l'OM chairman Pape Diouf is adamant he will not allow the player to join the Stade Louis II club.

Ribery's admission of an interest in moving to The Premiership may also revive Manchester United's interest in him, although Arsenal would seemingly be the Frenchman's preferred option in England.
