Sorry about the late, cos I must watch the highlight for this incident.

That's 2 options for the referee in that incident.

1) No foul for Puyol, so goal kick.
2) Puyol did foul to Fabregas -- i.e. Penalty and a straight red card to Puyol because Fabregas could score in that position -- Puyol was denying Fabregas' OBVIOUS goal scoring opportunities.

I would choose 2)

Cos Puyol did foul to Fabregas (as Puyol put out of his right leg), I agree that's not dreadful challenge -- if Fabregas didn't have any Obivous goal scoring opportunities -- a foul (or penalty inside the box) should be good enough.

But in this case, by the current Laws of the Game, that's no options for the referee if he decides to call a penalty.

Yes, if the referee gives a penalty and gives a yellow, he's failing to do his job ....... his refereeing assessor will give him a horrible report

About your question:

That's no different between 6 yards box and penalty area.

so it's depending 2 situation:

1) Does an defender commit a foul with serious foul of play/violent conduct? (bad foul enough for straight red card)
2) Does an defender commit a foul that denying an attacking team with clear goal scoring opportunties? (similar case as I described before)
