Bright:
I think you have mistakenly judged the Bulls on the trade matter. By all means, Paxon (Bulls' GM) has been trying to keep Eddy Curry (the main reason of this trade) from day one. He has been diagnosed with potential deadly heart discease. As you all probably know, Paxon requested a DNA testing for Curry to ensure that his "HEALTH" is good enuff to play and won't drop dead like Regie Lewis of Celtics back in the days. This DNA test became the subject of the heated debate in the NBA this past off season. Whether or not Paxon is doing the right thing really depends on each individual's view. Personally, I think that when Paxon offered to pay Curry $400,000USD annually for the next 50 years if Curry failed the DNA test is one of the most caring thing a GM can do. Look at bulls history, they paid Jay Will 3 mill after he stupidly crashed on his motor cycle. Knowing Curry will go to court and sue the Bulls for enforcing such test, he leaves Paxon no choice but trading him to the Knicks. Obviously, when you trade talent, you have to get equivilant value back, talent wise and contract wise. A. Davis holds one of the biggest contract in the Bulls roster and therefore is used to trade for Sweetney(great potential) and Tim Thomas (humongus contract for non-equivalent talent that the Knicks want to get rid of). So if you are the Bulls GM, will you rather to have court case with your starting Center during the regular season that might distract the rest of the team then make this trade? This trade's trigger is all because of the DNA test, and not because of Sweetney or Tim Thmoas.
As far as Antonio Davis's case, they have managed to asked the Knicks in waiving Davis and so the Bulls can sign him up again. So in reality, they are getting Davis back pretty soon. However, some rumor says that Davis wants to retire, therefore there's nothing the Bulls can really do about it.
And the effect of losing Davis. I have to disagree about Davis' "effect" on the team "spiritually". First, Davis is 37 years old, even though I dun disagree that Bill Cartwright was a valuable player, him and Davis are different. Cartwright stood up aganist MJ's arrogance (you know why he had throat surgery? MJ threw him in the ground during practice coz Cartwright stood in his face). And more importantly, Cartwright was in his prime and Davis is now reallly should be thinking about retiring. The Bulls' age problem, dun look down at their bench, they have valuable veterans in their deep deep roster. The team that hsould be worrying about age is Raptors. Another reason why they won't miss Davis's service as much is their style of play. Paxon and Scott Skiles built this team to win games with "EFFORT" and "HUSTLING". As long as the run all over the court and play denfense, they believe they can win every game. Davis is getting old to fit into this system. Its time to let the young guns play. Look, they got into the playoff without the service of curry last season, though its true that they will miss the post presense of him. The east really only have 4 powerful teams, and the other 4 spots are up for grab. This year's success will lie on Chandler, and Ben Gordon's development. and I hope they can keep up with their effort play throughout the season, as Skiles won't let them become lazy. |
