Barzagli Agent Confirms Viola Agreement



The agent of Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli has confirmed that a transfer fee has been sorted with Fiorentina, and that his client just has to agree personal terms before the transfer is complete.

It has been reported in the press over the last few days that Fiorentina were closing in on the Italian international, and Barzagli’s representative Claudio Orlandini has now confirmed that all is required to complete the deal is for personal terms to be agreed.

“The two clubs have come to an agreement,” Orlandini told Tuttomercatoweb.

“Now it’s just down to my client to agree personal terms with the Viola.

“I can confirm that Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg are also interested and ready to make bigger offers, but Andrea only wants to play for Fiorentina.

“The difference between what we are asking for and the club’s offer is trivial and we will meet tomorrow in the hope of agreeing the deal before Barzagli goes to Coverciano for Italy’s pre-Euro 2008 camp.”

Barzagli has been selected in Roberto Donadoni’s 24-man provisional squad that will meet up on Sunday at Coverciano.

New Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho, armed with a £100 million transfer warchest, will raid Chelsea for their top names this summer.

The Sun says Michael Essien, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard are all in Mourinho's sights, while defender Ricardo Carvalho has also been mentioned as a potential target.

The Premier League runners-up are expected to put up a fierce fight to keep their big names.

Sven confirmed as new Mexico manager


MEXICO CITY, June 3 (Reuters) -


Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was named as the new coach of Mexico on Tuesday.

Eriksson, sacked by English Premier League Manchester City on Monday, was approved at a meeting of the Mexican Football Federation's executive committee, comprising the owners of the 18 first division clubs.

'It's unanimous. Eriksson has been accepted by all the owners,' Jorge Vergara, president of the Guadalajara club, told reporters.

The 60-year-old Swede, who replaces Hugo Sanchez, will be in charge until the 2010 World Cup.

Sanchez was fired in March after the Under-23 side, whom he also coached, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Since then, former Under-17 coach Jesus Ramirez has been in charge on a temporary basis.

Mexico habitually reach the knockout stages at the World Cup but have never gone beyond the quarter-finals.

Eriksson will take over following the two-leg preliminary round World Cup qualifier against Belize later this month.


Last week, several leading Mexican players said that it was not the right time for a European coach to take over the team.

Lehmann lands Stuttgart contract

Jens Lehmann will continue his career after Euro 2008 with Stuttgart after signing a one-year contract with the 2007 German champions.

The 38-year-old completed the switch before the Germany national team jetted out to Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon.

"Jens was our top candidate from the very beginning for the goalkeeper position," Stuttgart coach Armin Veh told the club's website. "His qualities are undeniable and the whole team will benefit from his experience."

Stuttgart were alerted to Lehmann's availability when the former Arsenal stopper opted not to extend his contract with the Gunners and became a free agent this summer.

With Raphael Schafer failing to give the defence enough security in his first season since joining from Nurnberg, Stuttgart began the search for a new number one in May.

Lehmann can now expect to play at least one more season in the Bundesliga after spells with Schalke and Borussia Dortmund before moving to England five years ago.
