The Glazers have told Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to go for Lyon midfield ace Mickael Essien.
  
The Ghana international is rated at £21 million by Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas and has seen an offer from Chelsea rejected by his French club in the past fortnight.

United boss Ferguson has been trailing Essien for two years, having failed to push through a deal for the midfielder when he was a teenager and available for nothing.

The Sun says Ferguson has been given the green light by the Glazers to make a £17million move for Essien.

The Ghanaian, 22, has become a top target for Manchester United's manager after new owner Malcolm Glazer's son Joel insisted money would be made available.

Man Utd chief confirms more signings to come
Manchester United chief David Gill has confirmed there'll be more signings arriving this summer.
  
Following the captures of Edwin van der Sar and Park Ji-Sung, Gill United boss Sir Alex admitted Ferguson was on the look-out for one more signing, without giving anything away as to who it might be.

The debrief between Gill, manager Ferguson and assistant manager Carlos Queiroz over a second-successive season of relative failure in the Premiership and Champions League apparently highlighted three areas of concern, two of which have now been addressed.

"The discussions with Alex and Carlos as to where the team needs strengthening took place before the takeover," said Gill.

"By and large, the team is in good shape but we have already completed two key acquisitions and there is one other place we are looking at, for which money will be made available as the Glazers have made clear."

Man Utd reject Real Madrid bid of Owen, Samuel for Ronaldo
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has nipped in the bud talk of a swap move involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen.

The People says the audacious move, orchestrated by Madrid sporting director Arrigo Saachi, came as Ferguson and his stars were relaxing at their Portuguese training camp on the Algarve last week.

But even though the Spaniards were offering England striker Owen PLUS Argentine defender Walter Samuel AND £5million in cash, Ferguson's response was a blunt 'no chance'.

Now United are redoubling their efforts to reach a final agreement with Ronaldo and his agent over a revised contract that would keep the wing star at Old Trafford for another three years on an estimated £55,000 a week.
