Man Utd signing Mikel goes AWOL from Lyn
A visit from John Obi Mikel's agents sparked a security scare for the new Manchester United signing, it has been revealed.
The Nigerian midfielder, 18, snubbed the chance to join Chelsea in favour of Old Trafford.
But the Lyn Oslo player has been bombarded with threatening calls and e-mails.
Mikel, who joins United in January, was so scared he moved into an Oslo hotel.
He said: "I got threats from both Nigeria and England. I am very afraid."
Mikel stayed under 24-hour guard in the Norwegian hotel for five days while things calmed down.
But even a visit to his home by the star's agents sparked a security scare.
Lyn manager Morgan Andersen revealed: "The alarm said unknown people were in his apartment and police arrived quickly." Manchester United signing John Obi Mikel has been reported missing to Norwegian police.
The Guardian says Lyn Oslo, who hold the player's registration until January, informed the police after Mikel "disappeared" during a cup game against Klemetsrud.
The 18-year-old had been excused duty because of the press coverage since it emerged he had been moved to a "safe hotel" and assigned a security guard.
It is understood the club's management asked Mikel not to leave the ground until he had been given permission and security arrangements had been put in place. However, Mikel was seen leaving in the back seat of a car midway through the second half. Subsequent inquiries failed to reach him and the club decided to call the police. A phone call was then made to Old Trafford and, indirectly, Sir Alex Ferguson has been informed.
"The goal was to stop the car in which they were travelling," explained Joachim Andersen, the Lyn spokesman. "We gave the registration number to the police."
An Oslo police spokesman said last night that they did not regard Mikel as a "missing person" but that he was aware of the situation. Mikel is believed to be with a Nigerian agent, John Shittu, and Lyn are satisfied that their player is safe
