U.S. sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer has raised his stake in Manchester United to about 74 percent, a source close to the matter said on Friday.

The move brings the American financier to within a whisker of a key 75 percent threshold, above which Glazer can take full control of the 15 times English soccer champions and delist the shares.

The Glazer family said earlier in a statement it owned 71.8 percent of United, but the source said banking advisers had continued buying shares in the open market.

"We will definitely get to 75 percent by Monday," the source said.

Manchester United captain Roy Keane is ready to move to Celtic in the summer.
The Sun says Keane is ready to walk out of Old Trafford if manager Sir Alex Ferguson quits.

Manchester United's captain, Fergie's closest ally, will join Celtic should his manager become a victim of Malcolm Glazer's ?90million takeover.

Ferguson is set for talks with Glazer to discuss the club's future and his role in it over the next week.

Real Madrid have launched a £21 million bid for Manchester Unietd defender Rio Ferdinand.
  
The News of the World says Real's marketing director, Jose Angel Sanchez, flew to Manchester last week in a bid to exploit the turmoil surrounding Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover.

The American tycoon has saddled United with a £265m debt mountain in order to finance his buy-out and may now be tempted to recoup some of that money by selling Ferdinand.

Real are also acutely aware that Rio has still not signed a new contract to stay at United and the lure of linking up with his England team-mates David Beckham and Michael Owen could prove irresistible.

Ferdinand has two years left on his contract and has angered boss Sir Alex Ferguson over his reluctance to sign a new four-year deal worth £100,000 a week.

Sanchez has closed the deals for David Beckham from Manchester United and Michael Owen at Liverpool over the last two years.

Malcolm Glazer wants to bring Real Madrid ace David Beckham back to Manchester United.

The People says the American tycoon will give manager Sir Alex Ferguson the final say, but its understood the Glazer camp is keen for the England skipper to join the new Old Trafford regime.

And the idea might be tempting for Becks, who is trying to raise his own personal profile in the United States.

Glazer, of course, will be desperate to promote United in his own American market.

And he knows Beckham is the ONLY footballer to warrant a mention in the US media.

Privately, Fergie has told friends that there are no hard feelings between him and Beckham - despite the saga of the flying boot and the player's departure for Spain. Indeed, Beckham has recently paid tribute to Fergie's role in his career.

Beckham has opened up a soccer academy in London, going into partnership with American entertainment giants AEG.

And they are thought to have plans to expand into America.

LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Winger Ryan Giggs and American goalkeeper Tim Howard have agreed two-year extensions to their contracts at Manchester United.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with Ryan Giggs and Tim Howard of a further two years to their current contracts," the Premier League club said in a statement on Monday.

"This will keep Ryan and Tim at the club until June 2008 and June 2009 respectively."

Welshman Giggs, 31, has played for United only after joining the club as a 13-year-old. Howard, 26, joined United from the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in July 2003.

The Premier League will investigate claims that Lyn Oslo midfielder John Obi Mikel has been pressured into snubbing a move to Manchester United in favour Chelsea.
  
The Guardian says Daniel Fletcher, a London-based agent who holds the player's registration, has written to the Premier League and the Football Association to register an official complaint.

The letter is understood to raise the possibility that Mikel would still rather move to Old
Trafford than Chelsea, despite his public utterances to the contrary.

"My information is that the player still expresses a firm desire to join Manchester United,"
said Fletcher. "It is clear the player is seemingly being intimidated and coerced into acting against his wishes."

Fletcher, who works for the Athletes1 company, has been unable to contact Mikel for
eight months and has been dismayed to discover his client has allegedly become involved with another English agent, Jerome Anderson, as well as the Nigeria-based agent John Shittu.

Fletcher has sent the Premier League a copy of his contract with the 18-year-old, which runs until July 2006 and is verified by the FA and the Nigerian FA. Anderson was unavailable for comment last night.

Manchester United skipper Roy Keane admits the squad this season hasn't been
strong enough to compete with Chelsea.
  
He said: "The best squad always wins the league and maybe we have been a bit short.
I hope we can come back.

"One or two of these young players have so much to learn. It always takes maybe
a year or two for players to settle in.

"The likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are still learning the game and
they are very much individual players.

"They have a lot to learn regarding team play. That is the stuff they are working
on every day. But they are outstanding players."
